Porch Sessions through Quarantine
2020
Reading 2020, that year, that number… How does it make you feel?
It is no question that this year has made us all feel a little isolated.. doubtful.. maybe worried, or a little fearful.
It was scary for me for a long time.. Was I going to catch this virus? What if I got sick? I know a lot of people had the same questions too and we were all left feeling clueless and reaching for answers. I missed my routine, my people, my photography.
After weeks passed, staying confined to my home without seeing friends or family, it was tough. But my fear started to shed as the number of patients getting off ventilators got larger, and the number of people getting sick got smaller.
After taking the precautions recommended to us, in the end we did stay safe. We washed our hands a lot, wore masks anytime we went out in public. And things felt like they were getting better.
It was then my boyfriend encouraged me, after being on the fence for like a week about it, he said
“Mallory, you need to do porch sessions. Make it all sepia, black and white maybe… Like the old days. Because what we’re going through is history. Imagine decades from now looking back at that photo of your family on the porch. They’ll remember why.”
LOL, something like that. But it had me thinking, and he was absolutely right. This was history and I wanted to be there for those families, capturing these moments.

I didn’t think I would get any attention.
I was so wrong… I went to a total of 36 porches in the month of May.
Just because the world is in pause, staying home and staying safe, didn’t mean people’s lives stopped by any means. From graduates, to newborn babies, to catching mom before running to D.C. to be the amazing nurse she is, to twin birthdays, to just connecting again with somebody outside of your home for the first time in months, to rainbow hearts on the doors and windows of your front home to spread love and encouragement.
I am so grateful and thankful to receive all the generous donations and kind words from amazing local families and couples. You helped support my small business in struggling times, I’ll never forget that. Thank you!
